Risk paints from dreamlike imagination and from the brilliance of his own interpretation of symbols and everyday surroundings. His collection of "flag and star" paintings exhibits his use of American patriotism and modernity while his series of bold flowers evokes a sense of romance, deep emotion and sensual desire. He says, "Painting is exhilarating to me. I am overtaken by the anticipation of creating. It is so fulfilling to me to finish a painting and take a step back and see all that went into it. There is a story being told there and capturing that story is what I want to do." Recent work has shown his talent for a unique style of painting that is unconventional in technique. Self-taught, Risk uses acrylics on his signature hand-hewn wood canvases. "When my son was born, I had the ultimate desire to paint. I had to put down what words could not describe.
